Club skiing at FLC

Skiing is the longest running club sport at Fort Lewis College, hitting the slopes and running gates for more than 30 years.
 
The club's Ski & Snowboard Team competes in Alpine, Big Mountain, and Freestyle competitions in the Rocky Mountain Division of the United States Collegiate Ski & Snowboard Association, facing schools including Colorado State University, University of Colorado, and Colorado College.

As a FLC Alpine athlete/scholar, you can expect:

  • One dryland training a week/two on-snow trainings a week 
  • Individualized training plans based on your goals, strengths, and growth areas in skiing
  • Weekly practices at Chapman Hill and Purgatory 
  • Travel to United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard races at varying ski resorts
  • Involvement in a tight-knit skiing community of FLC students and opportunities to engage with the larger Durango skiing community through events and fundraisers
  • Opportunity to learn from local professional skiers

Benefits:

  • Affordable skiing
  • Access to indoor facilities on the FLC campus and at Durango’s ski destinations
  • Transportation and entry fees covered at most races
  • Coaching and individualized training programs
  • Inclusion in the local skiing community
  • Access to world class skiing areas in and around Durango.

Costs:

  • $500 per season
  • Must have own personal equipment (skis, helmets, poles, etc.)

Academic requirements: 

  • No academic, financial, or disciplinary holds
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 2.0
  • Enrolled in a minimum of 12 credits per semester

Other requirements: 

  • Assist with/participate regularly in events and fundraising
  • Stay up-to-date on annual dues payments

Eligibility: Registered full time student (12 credits, unless graduating in that semester) with a minimum GPA of 2.0

Competitions: Freeride World Qualifier Events (FWQ)

Requirements: Ability to ski/snowboard on expert terrain. To participate in team backcountry days, you must have, at minimum, attended an avalanche awareness course this year.

  • Helmet

  • Avalanche beacon
  • Avalanche shovel
  • Avalanche probe
  • Spine protector

Commitment Expected from Members: All members must attend group meetings and training sessions.
